Match report - 23/11/14
Handsworth Ladies 0
Sutton Coldfield Ladies RFC 10
On Sunday, Sutton ladies travelled away to local rivals Handsworth RFC for a day in History. It was the first full 15s game of the season for both sides, and for Handsworth it was the first ever ladies game to be played at their home ground.
Sutton lead the first half well, keeping possession within Handsworth’s twenty-two for the majority of the 40 minutes. The large crowd of spectators were kept entertained with the tackles and turnovers between the two teams, with Sutton missing a few opportunities for trys towards the end, thanks to Handsworth’s strong defence.
The second half saw Sutton’s Georgia Copeland re-start the game, however Handsworth weren’t given the opportunity to get passed the half way line before some nifty tackles meant that the ball was in Sutton’s hands once again. Sutton’s forwards maintained possession for the majority of the half, however the Home side’s Fly-Half and Captain Bethany Smith had a strong boot which tested Sutton’s defence whenever she got her hands on the ball.
Sutton’s first try came twenty minutes into the second half, after a pass out wide by centre Charlie Byrne found Winger Emily Jenkinson who outpaced the opposition leading to her first try in a green shirt. Sutton’s second try came just in the final minute after a strong drive and offload from Jessica Nally, meant that Charlie Byrne could score in the left corner of the pitch. Player of the match was awarded to Murielle Nguimpi for a superb game in both defence and attack as an inside centre.
